A pony by definition measures less or equal to 14.2 hands at the withers. For showing purposes, ponies are often grouped by size: small, medium, and large. Small ponies are 12.2 hands and under, medium ponies are over 12.2 but no taller than 13.2 hh, and large ponies are over 13.2 hh but no taller than 14.2 hh. Some horse breeds are not considered ponies, even when they have some animals that measure under 14.2 hands.

The hackney pony are primarily used for driving purposes, while other breeds, such as the Connemara pony are used primarily as riding horses. Welsh ponies are used for both riding and driving. Ponies are used for both riding and driving in many equestrian disciplines, including show hunter and other horse show competitive events and pleasure trail riding. They are seen in nearly every discipline. Ponies also are seen in pony hunters, short stirrup, children's ponies, jumpers, dressage, equitation, western pleasure. English pleasure and other events.

One of two competitors to jump a clear round in the 1968 Olympics was a 14.1 half bred Connemara named Stroller. Stroller competed in the Olympic games as a member of the British Team ridden by Marium Coakes. They won the silver medal!
