The American Quarter Horse is an American breed of horse bred for sprinting short distances. The Quarter Horse is recognized as a race horse, reining and cutting horse, rodeo competitor, ranch horse, and pleasure trail horse. Quarter horses dominate barrel racing, calf roping, team roping, cutting and reining. Other breeds such as Paint horses are also found in the competition and can be found here on the equine classifieds under Performance Horses and Pleasure Trail horses. Quarter Horses, Paint Horses and grade horses are shown in many other disciplines as well including driving, dressage and many other equestrian activities.

Quarter Horses come in many different colors: Sorrel, bay, black, brown, buckskin, chestnut, dun, red dun, gray, grulla, palomino, red roan and blue roan.

The stocky or heavier type Quarter horse is shorter and more compact. They stocky QH is found in reining and cutting horses. They are on the smaller side, with quick, catlike movement and very powerful hindquarters. Western pleasure show horses are often slightly taller, with smoother gaits. Horses shown in-hand also known as Halter horses are even larger with a very heavy muscled appearance much like a human body builder.

The finer or leaner type Quarter horses are found in racing and hunter events. They are somewhat taller and smoother muscled closer to the build of the Thoroughbred. The leaner QH is seen as a race horses, show hunter, equitation horse and/or Dressage horses. They feature longer legs but still maintain muscular hindquarters and powerful legs. This type is many times an appendix horse.
